Anysphere, the parent company of the AI-powered programming assistant Cursor, has just received a huge windfall!
Big cash infusion – they’ve received AI investment of 900 million dollars. That’s almost a billion dollars! The company as a whole is valued at 9.9 billion dollars.
Investors – The company went under its previous investors Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Accel and DST Global to get this new funding.
Growing SUPER fast – Cursor has received tens of dollars on an ongoing basis and has become a fight jockey. They used to get 100 million when their company was valued at 2.5 billion pre-revenue
Popular product – Cursor is an AI-driven programming chauffeur and is now called Vibe Coding
Making money fast – ARR growth stream is doubling every 2 months and has gone from 300 million before mid-April to 500 million per year.
How they charge:
Cursor offers all customers a 2-week trial period to try it out for free.
After that, you can pay $20 per month for the “Pro” version, which is for single users.
Companies can purchase a special “Business” version for their entire team for $40 per month per user.
Changing users: Initially, the majority of revenue came from individual users. Today, a larger portion of revenue comes from companies purchasing the business version for multiple users.
Declining offers: Earlier this year, other large companies such as OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, were interested in acquiring Anysphere. However, Anysphere rejected the offer because it wanted to remain independent. (OpenAI instead bought another fast-growing AI assistant called Windsurf for around 3 billion dollars)
Put simply, the company that developed the well-known programming assistant Cursor is being showered with investor money because it is one of the fastest growing companies, is very profitable and has many users. They have even turned down offers to be acquired by larger companies.
